The second weekend in February is the placeholder for the annual Volunteer Fire Department Ice Fishing Tournament in Tolna, ND. On February 12, over 300 anglers ventured on to Stump Lake in search of the largest perch, northern or walleye.
However, fishing is not the only attraction of the weekend. Yamaha Pro Angler Spencer Deutz held a Free Youth and Family Fishing Clinic after the weigh-in. The clinic was open to the public with 39 youth anglers and 70 adults attending!
With the importance of educating the public on Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS), Spencer’s message has always been Clean, Drain and Dry and 2022 is no different. With the exponential growth of ANS invading our waterways, it is imperative that the Clean, Drain and Dry message is embraced by everyone on the water, especially our youth. If our youth want to have healthy waters in years to come, we need to educate them now to prevent a potential disaster.
Throughout the interactive seminar, the youth anglers learned about fish identification, on-water safety and much more. At the end of the seminar, Spencer introduced a giveaway, Project Tikka Mino!
The Tikka Mino is a one-piece, jigging minnow that is an industry-first for Clam Pro Tackel. The minnow is designed for vertical presentation to rip fish through ice or open water. Project Tikka Mino is sponsored by Clam Outdoors and Renegade Outdoor Innovations. It’s a contest that allows each youth participant to design their own Tikka Mino on a blank coloring page. At the end of the year, Spencer will choose 10 winners and Renegade Outdoor Innovations will custom paint a Tikka Mino that is an exact match to their drawing!
Also at the event, each participant received a free rod/reel combination and a t-shirt courtesy of the National Professional Anglers Association (NPAA) Future Angler Foundation (FAF).
Deutz, the NPAA, and the FAF would like to thank the City of Tolna and the Tolna Volunteer Fire Department for their assistance with these events. Since 2010, Deutz has hosted over 80 clinics and believes he can make a significant impact on the sport through youth education and outreach.
